Rocket League Tournament Cups
Performs statistical analysis on publicly available cup opening footage to estimate drop probabilities for tournament cup rewards in Rocket League.
Context & Problem
During high school, I played a lot of Rocket League with my brother and cousin. Over time, I became competitive enough to join my school’s Rocket League Esports Team, and I started to care deeply about the mechanics of the game.
In late 2020, Rocket League introduced a new Tournament Cup reward system, where players could open different tiers of cups (Prospect, Challenger, All-Star, and Champions) for a chance to win items of varying rarity. The community quickly began asking a simple but unanswered question:
“Which tournament cup gives the best rewards?”
No one had reliable data. There were guesses, but no actual analysis. At the time, I was enrolled in AP Statistics, learning about sampling, probability, and confidence intervals; so I decided to take on the challenge myself.
The Solution
I collected data manually by watching hundreds of YouTube videos of players opening tournament cups. Each cup’s results were logged, categorized, and analyzed using statistical methods I learned in class. In total, I recorded over 2,200 data points across all cup types.
Using that dataset, I calculated estimated drop rates and 95% confidence intervals for each rarity tier, essentially reconstructing Rocket League’s hidden drop system. I published the results online and in a detailed article titled:
“Best Rocket League Tournament Cup to Open (With Drop Rates & Data)”
The findings revealed that while Prospect Cups gave a high quantity of low-tier items, All-Star Cups were far more credit-efficient for Exotic and Black Market rewards.
Impact
The analysis spread quickly across Reddit and other community forums. Players began using the data to make smarter decisions about which cups to open, saving in-game currency and optimizing their reward potential.
Even years later, I still receive messages from players thanking me for the work and referencing the dataset. It proved that even a small project, when applied to a real question people care about, can make a lasting impact.
Reflection & Future Improvements
This project taught me how to connect classroom knowledge with real-world curiosity. It also gave me hands-on experience in data collection, probability modeling, and confidence interval analysis.
If I were to revisit it, I’d:
- Expand the dataset to tens of thousands of entries for higher accuracy
- Record metadata such as season, video link, paint color, certification, and cup type
- Open-source the dataset to allow community contributions and verification
These improvements would make the analysis more transparent and statistically rigorous, transforming it into a living research project for the gaming community.
