An intelligent planning app that simplifies daily scheduling with features like time blocking, automatic task organization, and goal tracking—designed to help students and returned missionaries take control of their day with ease and clarity.

Context & Problem

This project began as part of CS260 - Introduction to Web Programming, where we were challenged to conceptualize a startup application and develop its foundation. I chose to build Pivot Calendar because of a recurring sentiment I heard from returned missionaries:

“I wish I could plan like I did on my mission.”

Missionaries use a tool called Areabook to plan their days, set goals, and track progress. After returning home, many lose that structured system, leading to less productive routines and a sense of disorganization. Pivot Calendar was my attempt to recreate that experience; offering an accessible, intelligent tool that helps users plan their time effectively while balancing school, work, and personal goals.

Though the app remains in early development, my long-term vision is to evolve it into a full-featured productivity system hosted as a subdomain of dallinking.com. I want it to outperform traditional calendar apps by focusing on meaningful planning, personalized organization, and intuitive daily execution.

Future Vision

I plan to integrate Pivot Calendar with other projects like Floride. Imagine a system that automatically balances team workloads, schedules tasks intelligently, and helps groups achieve more with less friction. Pivot Calendar’s architecture could become the foundation for that kind of adaptive, AI-assisted planning.

The ultimate goal is simple: help people plan smarter and accomplish more; whether they’re managing a personal routine or coordinating a full development team.

What I Learned

Pivot Calendar marked several “firsts” for me as a developer. It was my introduction to:

  • React and modern front-end development
  • WebSockets, Node.js, and AWS
  • NPM package management and back-end architecture
  • Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) workflows

These technologies became the backbone of my later projects, including dallinking.com itself. The lessons I learned about deployment pipelines, cloud infrastructure, and full-stack design accelerated my ability to bring more complex ideas to life.

Beyond the technical side, this project taught me about the realities of building startups; the time, testing, and iteration it takes to move an idea from concept to product. Pivot Calendar was more than a class project; it was a foundational experience that bridged the gap between learning and creating, shaping how I now approach every new venture.
