Baseball Umpire

Umpiring youth baseball for UPG taught me the importance of awareness, positioning, and perspective, both literally and figuratively. While the fundamentals of officiating carried over from my experience as a basketball referee, baseball introduced a new set of challenges centered around field presence, precision, and anticipation.

In baseball, positioning determines perception. I had to stay out of players’ lines of sight while maintaining the best possible view of each play, often reading the game several steps ahead to be in the right place at the right time. That situational awareness became second nature and helped me make accurate calls while staying nearly invisible to the flow of the game.

Just like in basketball, I served not only as an enforcer of the rules but also as a mentor and mediator. I worked to keep games running smoothly by communicating clearly with players, coaches, and parents, de-escalating tense moments, and fostering respect between all sides. Consistency and professionalism were key; every call, explanation, and gesture contributed to the overall tone of the game.

Between games, I made it a point to review my own performance and seek feedback from peers. That continuous improvement loop taught me how to self-assess objectively and refine my judgment and timing, skills that extend far beyond the diamond.

Through umpiring, I learned that leadership often means staying calm and centered while others react emotionally. By keeping focus, positioning, and communication aligned, I was able to help create a fair and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
